Since 1986, the North Vancouver Outdoor School Alumni Society has worked tirelessly to encourage and support environmental and cultural education at the Outdoor School at the Cheakamus Centre (formerly the North Vancouver Outdoor School). As a registered charity, the NVOSAS works to ensure that the educational programs of the Outdoor School are universally available to all, regardless of financial need.
NVOSAS members work diligently to develop partnerships which make these mandates possible. Over time, NVOSAS members have developed partnerships with such community minded organizations as: Vancouver Foundation, Vancity Savings, BC Hydro, CN Rail, Lions Clubs, and the merchants and citizens of Squamish and the North Shore.
The programs supported by these partnerships include:
- Outdoor School for Kids Bursary Fund: ensuring that no child is denied access to the Outdoor School at the Cheakamus Centre for financial reasons. In the last five years over $30,000 has been raised for this purpose.
- Scholarship Fund: most of the volunteers at the Outdoor School are high school students. This fund will aid some in their pursuit of post secondary studies. In 2016, a total of $600 was awarded.
- Community Events: we support many community events which further nature education including the Cheakmaus Centre Open House, SFU Education Student Association nature learning workshop, North Shore Coho Festival and North Vancouver’s Canada Day celebrations.
- Counsellor Volunteer Training: Alumni members are actively involved in planning and implementing training programs for the Outdoor School’s many talented volunteers.
Membership in the Alumni Society is only $10 a year and is open to any individual who has an interest in, or wishes to support, the activities of the NVOS Alumni Society or the Outdoor School Program at the Cheakamus Centre.
